The first MTU value is the interface MTU, it’s 1500 bytes by default for Ethernet. The second one is the IP MTU which is also 1500 bytes. Once you get above 1500 bytes your router will start fragmenting the IP packets. Is this limit of 1500 bytes really working? There’s an easy way to find out.
When you are testing this, start with the values suggested above, if you get replies, great, increase the MTU value. When you get “Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.” Rather than replies, your MTU is too high now, so lower it and you can get the MTU set to the absolute ceiling (where +/- 1 will reply / fragment-out). Jan 03, 2017 · MTU. A maximum transmission unit (MTU) is the largest packet or frame size, specified in octets (eight-bit bytes) that can be sent in a packet- or frame-based network such as the internet. The internet’s transmission control protocol (TCP) uses the MTU to determine the maximum size of each packet in any transmission. Aug 12, 2008 · MTU: 1452. In this video, I try to lower my ping by lowering my MTU settings to get a better connection and lower ping for gaming. I'm having trouble finding out how to change the router MTU setting. I got a new modem (the old one fizzled out), and now my internet is working fine. However, when I go to connect my Xbox 360 to the internet, it says the MTU setting is incorrect and to go to the router configuration Web page to cha I was using a Billion router before I switched to the Asus and lowering the MTU made a consistent difference to the upload speed. It went from about 1mbps to about 1.8mbps. There are many posts in the Optus forum with other users experiencing the same increased upload speeds with a lower MTU. Increased MTU in LTE network allows for more efficient exchange between eNodeB and EPC, e.g. MTU value of 1600 in S1-U is sufficient for transmitting 1500 bytes of user data, and mobile network overhead (GTP + UDP + new IP header) without fragmentation. Increased MTU in 2g/3g network brings none or almost none profit.
Apr 17, 2018 · The maximum transfer unit (MTU) specifies the maximum transmission size of an interface. A different MTU value may be specified for each interface that TCP/IP uses. The MTU is usually determined by negotiating with the lower-level driver. However, this value may be overridden.
Note: It's not a BT Router i'm using, i'm using a Netgear DG834N. I am sure BT Routers like the HomeHub have a MTU Size of 1500 set in the Router Interface, am I correct? My Netgear DG834N has a MTU Size of 1458 in the Router Interface by default. Thanks for responding. If the router has a maximum of 1488 and your PC/PS has an MTU of 1492, then the outgoing packets will fragment (or fail) because they are larger than 1488. On a home network, the internet connection maximum MTU should be determined and set in the router. All other devices should be the same or lower than the router's MTU, for it to work properly.
I'm interested in the 1480 as well. If the router is set to 1500 but the Xbox shows 1480 on the network test what is going on? I know for a fact that changing settings on my router that other people say doesn't matter does make a difference for me.
